White Denial
Over this past weekend, the United States was ONCE AGAIN reminded just how tiny Black lives are regarded and matter. INTENTIONALLY, Black lives were hunted and sent to the ancestors for merely EXISTING. What was the response from far too many non-black citizens? Laughter...gaslighting...false equivalencies...silence...deflection. Such reactions come on the DIRECT heels of said individuals claiming to be "traumatized" via the "Oscar slap heard 'round the globe", white women trying to guilt Black women into fighting for their bodily autonomy, and a rise in faux allyship.
Amazing that they are offered the privilege to be sooooooo affected by a slap between two Black me, but silently amused or unphased by the brutal execution of a variant of Black people over the weekend. All of the 'common folk' and 'woke' celebrities are quieter than church mice that have previously knighted themselves as good people that historically have fought the good fight for Black people are now hiding in their bunkers as more heartwrenching and infuriating details are being uncovered.
Additionally, the number of white people (who if you search thoroughly enough, very well believe that Black people are the most racist) that are laughing at articles about the massacre is jarring; but not surprising. Our trauma, our pain, and our deaths are the furthest from serious matters to them as it gets. They are far more compassionate towards animals and clumps f cells than they are living, breathing, thriving HUMANS that just happen to be melanated. They deem the uncouth jokes about our murders to be nothing more than 'dark humor' while telling us to merely get over it.
They season this sentiment by telling us that they are oppressed and that slavery (and Jim Crow) happened so long ago and no one is affected by it now. Non-black people have decided that their best method of white denial is to play the oppression Olympics and wear victimhood as a trending costume. Their entitlement forces them to center themselves as they gaslight and blame us for the actions of THEIR brethren.
The ones that are the most annoying and harmful to the lives of Black people are those that LOVE to brag after each holiday about how they "checked" their racist relatives. Yet now, when it is needed, they merely say, "we don't claim him", "he's not one of us", "that's one of the 55" or "he's just a mentally ill teen". They have the privilege of individuality as when as the audacity to expect us to do the work to educate and correct THEIR community. They have this expectation while telling us (by way of the use of an abundance of tropes) to clean up our own house as a "fix-all" for their kindred hunting us down as if we were the Bugs to their Elmer Fudd.
Moreover, as much as the US LOVES to scream from the mountain tops that no one today owns slaves; the non-black certainly expects us to do as much labor for them FREELY as they deem possible. Even as we are in the midst of a community-wide trauma, they want us to buy their denial and still render them our [modern-day] slave labor. I would tell them to do better, but [sadly] they believe that they are doing better and those that don't contend that I am to teach them to do such.
