You Aren't Separating the Artist from the Art, You're Separating Black Women from the Conversation
Why are there always soooooo many excuses given to pedophiles within the Black community? Why are members of the LGBTQUIA+ community are shunned and demonized for existing? No one bats an eye at the grandfather/father/uncle/brother/cousin that can NOT be left alone with ANY CHILD, but all eyes are on the effeminate child that merely wants to be loved and respected.
You abuse apologists don't even realize that that is what you are allowing your mouth to open and spill out, "Robert is guilty, but R. Kelly is a great artist." So because you like music that was INFLUENCED BY HIS LIFE AND TROUBLESOME THOUGHTS, he is to be absolved in the public eye for the trauma he caused? You, IDIOTS, are on par with the Trump cults with everyone that you have blamed for ROBERT S. KELLY'S ACTIONS. You have blamed the victims, the parents, the industry, and more. At this point, I am waiting for you all to blame the dang wind.
It evades your brain cells that you are furthering the patriarchal practice of placing the blame of men's actions on women and the governing of men's impulses on women. Here are some phrases that may drive this home for you:- "Don't be a stumbling block for the men here at the church. Be more mindful of what you wear."
- "Why are you walking around here being all fast?"
- "You are going to get the wrong kind of attention wearing that."
- "You know you shouldn't be distracting him like that, go change."
- "Uncle Steve is coming over, you need to go change."
- "Men are going to be men, you know that.'
- 'It's just locker room talk."
- "You should be flattered he finds you attractive."
- "That's a lil too grown for her to be wearing."
- "You need to cover up, you are distracting my husband."
- "Quit being so fast. I know why all those boys are always staring at you."
Sadly, that is not even the tip of the iceberg.
Now, let us discuss why excusing your desire to continue to have R. Kelly chart and go viral is a harmful removal (yet again) of Black women from the conversation of being victimized. Excusing away the violating of Kelly's victims continues a vicious trope that places Black girls and women outside of the realm of being capable of being victims. We are [overly] sexualized from birth and looked at by all demographics as not being in possession of our own bodies. We are (far too often) conditioned to be the guardians of the purity of men, and simultaneously the recipient of mere attention.
Too many Black women are convinced that a breathing partner is all that they deserve and that our only plot in life is to struggle through a life of abuse, disrespect, and degradation. This is why it is so easy to excuse crimes committed against us and to turn a blind eye.
YOU DON'T SEE VIOLATING US AS A BAD THING, YOU SEE IT AS A STATUS QUO.
You can NOT say, "Protect Black Women" to merely leave us in shambles and alone because your favorite maestro was the perpetrator. You do NOT get to claim on social media that "if anyone touches mine, I would..." to turn around and excuse away crimes against those mirroring your female relatives and friends.
Do you NOT get that each time you excuse away this behavior, you are opening a door for it to continue and increase? is this lost upon you? You embolden the pedophiles and rapists that utilize your altered narratives when defending their CRIMES!!!!!!!!!!! You can NOT separate an artist from the artistry that was influenced by their lives!!!!
ART IMITATES LIFE!
