Holiday Holiness
It is approaching that time of the year when everyone pretends to be holier than thou. Once we waltz past Halloween, everyone is anti-racist, family-oriented, and peaches n cream. *gag* In will come the flooding of pictures featuring people who are (typically) only gossiped about and posts about the "educating of racist" kindred. 😏
Tis the season of faux spirituality and unbreakable familial bonds. Tis the season of racial/homophobic/etc. rejection. Tis the season of fakery and forced fellowship.
As the temperatures decrease, the need for humans (especially within the US) to congregate and seem more wholesome than they actually are increases. There is something about the [Christian] holiday season that makes people want to prove their sanctity by surrounding them with whom they avoid and degrade every other time during the year. Just as with most other things in this PR-driven, capitalistic, (barely) first-world country...playing pretend reigns supreme.
Think I am reaching? Take a moment and be honest with yourself for a moment. Think of when you CHOOSE to be around certain family members. Think of how many invitations you receive at any other time of the year. How many times? How well do you know your relatives? Why is that?
For those born of racist families...after "escaping" their fate, why do you CHOOSE to return for turkey and mistletoe? You KNOW that they aren't even attempting to change. You know that a few days of debate will alter NOTHING. So why are you subjecting yourself to the headache and your (plausible) children to the possibility of becoming indoctrinated?
I know! I know! So that you can go and brag about being the season's savior. So that you can pretend that you have the greatest family in the land. This isn't a fairytale where you are the shining hero cast to save the village from the evils of year-long loneliness. How about making your moves and feelings definite. Decide to be authentic. Decide to not avoid people until you can get a cheesy holiday photo op. So what is this plan for this year folks? Are you continuing the tradition of holiday holiness or will there be a new tradition?
